My career began in the gemstone and jewellery trade — at the source in East Africa, then across the Gulf States, often dealing with buyers I’d only just met, in markets where the rules were unfamiliar and a misjudgement was costly. When a buyer I trusted didn’t pay, and I realised I’d had no way of knowing that in advance, I learnt the expensive lesson that has shaped everything since: in international trade, the difference between a good deal and an expensive mistake usually comes down to not having the right information at the right time.
That lesson became a career. For more than four decades I’ve worked in international trade and corporate due diligence — founding two credit-research firms, ICP (International Company Profile) and Dynamic Business Information Ltd; supplying intelligence to Dun & Bradstreet, Experian and Equifax; and advising leading export credit insurers such as Euler Hermes, Coface, Export Development Canada and Sinosure, across five continents.
That work also produced something I hadn’t originally planned: a curated library of hundreds of research tools, data sources, and practical export resources — built up over decades of professional use. That library is now our Knowledge Base — including our Export Hub and Export Guide 101 — and is freely available to every exporter who uses TradeMatch Pro.
What I learnt from all of it is that the SME exporter rarely gets access to the same quality of intelligence as the large corporation. It’s either too expensive, too slow, or too generic. Large corporations buy that certainty as a matter of course; the SME exporter, who can least afford to get it wrong, usually cannot.
